Description

Offsite Commission of two horses, Susie, a standardbred cross, and Charlie, a standardbred.
Someday, when I buy a horse, I swear the first consideration is going to standardbreds. The more I hear people talk about them and the more I draw them, the more I fall in love with the breed.

I was absolutely thrilled with the challenge on this one. I was given a specific background to do and I really pushed myself to replicate it. I was beaming when I finished those happy little trees. And dapples.. whenever I do dapples I am constantly struggling to keep them from eating the details. But I alway really like how the color looks.

This is the second George Stubbs inspired picture I've done, I have a few more in the works right now. I am really enjoying working on them.

As always critiques are more than welcome!
(For those interested I've posted some work in progress photos [link])

I see the Stubbs influence here.  So far I like this one best!  Yes, dapples are the pits.  That artist I mentioned to you in another comment, Sarah Minkiewicz, can help you with things like that.  There are lots of methods out there for dapples and other color challenges.  Look around on FB.
A friend of my dad's had some racing Standardbreds and let me drive them at their barn a few times.  You can't see <bleep> sitting down there!  The ground is flying by so closely, and you have to remember that for the racers pulling the reins can mean go faster!  The tail whips your face...  So cool.  Their training technique is way different from Thoroughbreds; Lord knows why.  I've never seen one as a saddle horse, though.  Too tall for me, at 5'1".  I had a Morgan gelding, seal brown, years ago, and he was so comfortable to ride.  I would like to try out a Highland Pony, but of course they are rare in the States and way expensive.
