Promised I would post some work in progress shots. As always I forgot about taking screenshots partway through, but I remembered while working on the background so I think it's still worth posting. Some day I'll do some proper tutorials!
1. Rough sketch of where I want everything 2. Shape of horses are filled in, then I lock those layers so when I can paint over without going outside the shape. (A trick is to later add an outer glow to soften the edge of the shape) 3. Here is where I forgot screen shots. So horses are pretty near done, I've also roughed in some of the background. 4. Horses are completed. Took this shot to show how I start making clouds. I start with big rough streaks of the colors I want, then use a PS chalk brush to soften and blend the edges. 5. Finished the clouds and put down a rough foreground. I use the big streaks of color on the grass. I start with the darkest shades I want and then will be going over it with lighter streaks and blends to create grass. 6. Finished the grass, which ended up taking the longest of everything, Yikes! 7. Finished the details of the foreground and roughed in the shape of the trees and bushes. I ended up going over all that again with some darker shades, I wasn't satisfied with how I started it. 8. Finished trees and bushes, I think I should do a tutorial on how to do these. 9. Finished background. I constantly have to remind myself that the further away something is the less detail there should be! Voila! Finished pic
I think the next one I do I will try and get my livestream working for.
one of my favorite pieces to date but, a few questions.... do you paint grass with a small hard brush, or do you use a grass brush? also, when you say outer glow, do you mean it as a blur effect? very interesting
For the paintbrush, I use the chalk brush, and change the settings like this: [link] I make the grass with a color that is just a little lighter than the base color and then use a much brighter color and go back over the area to add a few highlights.
Yup! I use the outer glow to add just a slight blur to the edges of the horses. Here were my settings [link] If the subject has a lot of different colors, I will right click on the outerglow in the layers panel, and select "create layer" Then I lock the new outer glow layer and paint over it so the glow matches the edges of the horse.

I hope that helps!
