Artist's Comments

Portrait of a standardbred gelding. I'm not really sure what to say, I'm smitten with this picture! lol! I think this is the closest I have gotten in capturing a horse's color in the portraits I have been working on. So I'm pretty happy! Plus just testing out some new techniques on this I figured out how to do some of the coloring I was stuck on with another picture that I have had set aside for months!

Here is the original photo I worked from: [link]

When I have the means someday, there will be an off-track standardbred in my pasture!

Thank you for taking a look!

I like all your new horse pictures. Makes me want to draw some horses too.

I just have one question I wanted to ask you for awhile. How do you make the grass and tree backgrounds in your images and what kind of texture do you use (in case it is really a texture I see there)?

Thank you!

Ooo! Well, for things like the mountains I duplicate the layer, and then put a bit of a gaussian blur on the bottom layer to make a haze around it.

Also when I do my grass, I do it in stripes across the page, as I get further back I begin to blur the stripes more and more.

When I am totally done with the background, usually having applied a texture as well, I duplicate the whole thing, merge the duplicate layers together, use a lens blur on it and then play around with the opacity and layer style until is find one that works to make it feel very soft and smooth.
